A stranger steps out of the desert night into the light of a dying campfire and recites the names of four Tucson prospectors who rode west thirty years ago.
Characters
- The stranger — Night visitor at the fire: A man who comes in out of the desert night and tells a thirty-year-old story in a flat, uninflected voice.
- The narrator — Narrator and camp member: One of six gentleman adventurers camped in the desert, watching the visitor from under a low-pulled hat.
- The captain — Leader of the party: An old hand in this country whose word settles matters at the fire.
- Sam Yountsey — Hothead of the party: A man of the camp who springs up with a drawn pistol as soon as the tale touches his sense of honour.
