• the narrator — a hunting gentleman: A hunter who drives to Tula for shot by night and buys off his pursuers with two roubles.
• Filofey — the peasant driver: A simple horse-owner who misses the ford, first hears the pursuit and pities his three horses.
• Yermolaï — the hunter's servant and companion: He loses all the shot, hires Filofey, and later brings the news of a murdered merchant.
• the giant in a cape — the leader of the night cart: A grinning big fellow who blocks the road and asks for money for a drink.
