Captain Ribnikov

Characters

• Staff-Captain Ribnikov — Japanese intelligence agent posing as a Russian officer: He poses as a pathetic, nervous wounded officer while collecting information about the Russian army.
• Vladimir Ivanovich Schavinsky — Petersburg journalist: The observer who gradually recognizes that Rybnikov is an outsider.
• Nastya (Clotilde) — a prostitute in a Petersburg house: She hears a Japanese word in Rybnikov's sleep and, out of envy of her friend, gives him away to Leonka.
• Leonka — a detective, the idol of the whole house: Leonti Spiridonovich, boastful and genuinely brave; he leaps from the window after Rybnikov and takes him.
• Genka — Clotilde's friend and Leonka's mistress: Henrietta, who listens rapt to Leonka's stories about his exploits.
• Karyukov — a patron of the arts, Schavinsky's companion: A familiar of the house where the night party ends; in the morning nobody can wake him.
• Sashka Strahlmann — a young assistant public prosecutor: Famous for telling anecdotes; it is in his party that Rybnikov reaches the house.
• Zhenin-Lirsky — a well-known musical comedy actor: He sings a gipsy song in the red room and is the first to call Rybnikov Major Fukushima.
