In St Petersburg during the Russo-Japanese War, an apparent wounded officer gathers military intelligence until a journalist begins to see through his disguise.

- Karyukov — a patron of the arts, Schavinsky's companion: A familiar of the house where the night party ends; in the morning nobody can wake him.
- Sashka Strahlmann — a young assistant public prosecutor: Famous for telling anecdotes; it is in his party that Rybnikov reaches the house.
- Zhenin-Lirsky — a well-known musical comedy actor: He sings a gipsy song in the red room and is the first to call Rybnikov Major Fukushima.
