For thirteen years an unknown Fedyukov signs the visitors' list in a civil councillor's hall, and the answer turns out to be plain.

- Navagin — an actual civil councillor: The householder who has puzzled for thirteen years over an unknown guest's signature and takes up spiritualism.
- Fedyukov — the sacristan of the parish: A church servant who, going round with the cross, signs the visitors' lists of grand houses out of sheer fondness for it.
- Zina (Madame Navagin) — Navagin's wife, a spiritualist: She explains the riddle as a sympathetic spirit and gets her husband to summon Fedyukov with a saucer.
- Grigory — the hall porter: He swears on the ikon that no Fedyukov has ever been in the hall.
- Filipp Sergeyitch — Navagin's secretary: He makes the fair copy of his chief's spiritualist article and catches the outburst that follows.
